Celebrating 10,000 views of my “13 Pillars of Internet marketing” video on YouTube

I’ve had great success with video marketing over the past year, so I thought I’d share how I managed to drive over 10,000 RELEVANT YouTube visitors to one of my Internet marketing videos…

Here’s the link to the video:

Back in April 2007 I hosted my first major public Internet marketing seminar in Edinburgh, Scotland. I called the seminar the “13 Pillars of Internet Marketing”, focusing on the 13 key elements of an Internet marketing strategy.

I had the seminar filmed, so I decided to make the introduction / overview section around 10 minutes long – recorded with the intention of publishing it on YouTube. Thankfully I was spot-on with my timing – the video is nine minutes and 51 seconds long – just
short of the maximum length allowed for YouTube!

I wanted to optimize the video to appear in YouTube search results for the phrase ‘Internet marketing’. (And I’m pleased to say that the video has nearly always remained on the first page of YouTube results for that phrase since I uploaded it over a year ago.)

Here’s how I achieved this:

1) I included the keyword phrase ‘Internet marketing’ in the video title and video description

Note: If you include your domain at the front of your video description (in http://www.13pillars.com format), then YouTube will automatically turn this into a live link. (Remember to try and include a unique domain as a call to action within the video as
well so you can measure conversion rates)

2) I bookmarked my YouTube video link on a couple of social bookmarking sites

3) I emailed a list of approximately 1000 people asking for a favour – I said to people that I’d just uploaded a video and I’d really appreciate if they could take a look at it – and if they liked it, add a comment and give it a rating. Around 10 people out of the 1000 did this.

And within a month or so I was on the first page of YouTube search results for the keyword phrase ‘Internet marketing’.

That’s all it took – 10,000 relevant video views just like that!

Hopefully this will persuade you that if you haven’t tried it yet, you should give video marketing a go too!

By the way… have you added your comment to the video yet? ;-)

Web 3.0 Marketing – An Introduction to ‘MyPage Marketing’

According to Jemima Kiss, while web 2.0 can be summarised as interaction, web 3.0 is about recommendation and personalisation. But how will a more personalised web impact marketing your business online?

Web 3.0 Marketing Tools

Services like Google Gadgets and Facebook Applications are already allowing users to enjoy a highly personalised web experience. There are already nearly 40,000 Google Gadgets and 15,000 Facebook Applications.

What these tools allow people to do is add additional functionality and relevance to their personalised Google home page or Facebook profile.

Whatever your preferences, you’re bound to find at least one widget that improves the quality of your online experience.

MyPage Marketing

This is where business can take advantage of web 3.0. By offering their own Google Gadget or Facebook Application, businesses can target potential consumers long before any purchase decision has been made. This is what I refer to as MyPage Marketing.

MyPage Marketing occurs when users decide to place a widget on their personalised web page which benefits them – but also exposes them to subtle advertising from the widget developer.

The key to successful MyPage Marketing is to ensure that the user benefits from your widget, has a reason to tell their friends about it, and doesn’t feel that they’re being exposed to a marketing message.

The best time for a business to get started with a MyPage Marketing campaign is as soon as possible. Once you accumulate enough widget users, a snowball effect occurs; because your existing users will tell their friends and you’ll also start to appear higher in the Google Gadget and Facebook Application directory results.

The whole seminar was recorded to be released as a DVD set with additional bonus material. It’s going to be to be an ideal step-by-step Internet marketing strategy plan for marketing managers, business leaders and entrepreneurs. Watch this space!

What Is Digg And Should It Be Part Of Your Internet Marketing Strategy?

What is Digg?

Digg is a Social News powered website that allows users to ‘vote’ on the most popular news stories of the day. Because it is the users that decide on the relevance of each news story, it could be argued that the stories listed as most popular on Digg are a more accurate reflection of what’s hot and what’s not in comparison with a traditional news provider.

To Digg or Bury… that is the question

All stories that are featured on Digg are submitted by individual users. Other users then have the option to Digg (vote for) submitted stories as something which may be of interest or of use to other users. Users may also decide to Bury (vote against) stories which helps to eliminate spam.

Other Social News sites are available

Although there are other Social News websites such as Reddit and Netscape, Digg continues to be by far the most popular as we speak.

Do many people from your industry actively use Digg?

Reaching the Digg home page by having a news story of your own being ‘Dugg’ can bring an enormous amount of traffic to your website – although whether or not that traffic will be useful for you is another story. Take time to research whether or not there are many news stories that relate to your industry before spending too much time ‘Digging’.

Don’t just promote your own stories

If you decide that it may be worthwhile to use Digg as a marketing tool for your own business, make sure that you take the time to start commenting on other stories relevant to your industry before attempting self-promotion. This will help you learn how the Digg phenomenon works before approaching your own marketing from the wrong angle!

What is del.icio.us?

Del.icio.us is generally considered to be the most popular social bookmarking website.

What the heck is a social bookmarking website!?

Good question! A social bookmarking website is somewhere online that you can keep a record of all your favourite web pages. You can then log in from any computer around the world to access your favourites.

However, what’s even more important about a social bookmarking service is that it’s social. This means that if you want you can share your favourite web pages with other users – and you can see what everyone else is saving in their favourites.

This has two key benefits

A social bookmarking service offers two key benefits as well in addition to giving you the ability to access your favourite web pages on the move:

1) Because you can view web pages that have already been voted as relevant by real people – and not just search engines – the chances are that you won’t be trawling through tens of websites to find the information you need

2) Because these bookmarks are stored online, this gives search engines an opportunity to see what’s hot and what’s not at the moment. This means all you have to do is persuade you visitors to bookmark your site online in their favourites to increase your appeal to search engines!

What is RSS and Why is it Important?

RSS stands for ‘Really Simple Syndication’. It allows you to see when new articles have been added to PurpleInternetMarketing.com without having to visit our website every day.

When you subscribe to our RSS feed (free of charge), our latest Internet marketing tips appear on your home page as soon as they are published. You can then decide whether or not you want to read the full article.

Not all websites currently provide RSS, but it is growing rapidly in popularity and many others, including the BBC and CNN, offer it.

The first thing you need is something called an ‘RSS reader’. This is a piece of software that checks our RSS feed and lets you display a summary of the latest articles published on PurpleInternetMarketing.com. Some of the most popular software that lets you do this includes, Google Reader, My Yahoo and NewsGator.

Once you have chosen an RSS reader, all you have to do is copy our RSS feed website address which is http://feeds.feedburner.com/purpleinternetmarketing into the ‘add content’ section of your RSS reader software. You should then be able to view our most recently published Internet marketing advice articles.
